Pipe Volume Calculator — Cubic Yards

Cubic yards is the unit of earthwork, concrete and grout. This pipe volume calculator in cubic yards gives yd³ for large pipes and culverts — handy when you are matching pipe fill, abandonment grout or backfill against material ordered by the yard.

Cubic yards suits large lines and grout estimates. The cubic-feet card helps for smaller pipes.

Why cubic yards for pipe volume

Most pipe fluids are counted in gallons or litres, but cubic yards shows up whenever a pipe interacts with bulk materials: filling an abandoned line with grout, estimating flowable fill, or reconciling the internal space of a large culvert against concrete or slurry ordered by the yard. Because a cubic yard is 27 cubic feet, only large pipes give tidy numbers — small bores are easier to read in ft³ or gallons.

Cubic yards from the dimensions

Find the volume in cubic feet, then divide by 27:

yd³ = [ π × (IDft/2)² × Lft ] ÷ 27

Example: a 100 ft run of 24-inch pipe (bore 22.624 in = 1.885 ft) has an area of 2.791 ft² and a volume of 279.1 ft³, which is about 10.3 cubic yards. If you were grouting that line to abandon it, that is close to the neat grout volume before shrinkage and losses.

Cubic yards conversions

  • 1 cubic yard = 27 cubic feet = 201.97 US gallons.
  • 1 cubic yard = 0.7646 cubic metres = 764.6 litres.

Typical cubic-yard jobs

Line abandonment and grouting, large culvert and storm-drain contents, slurry and flowable-fill estimating, and any reconciliation against material bought by the yard are the usual reasons to want yd³. Add a fittings or over-order allowance when you are buying grout, since real placements always lose some volume to losses and irregular geometry.

Estimating vs pouring

The calculator gives the neat internal volume. When you are ordering grout or fill, add a practical allowance (often 5–15%) for over-break, spillage and pump losses. The fill-level and fittings settings help you build that into the estimate rather than doing it on the back of an envelope.

Before you act on the output, it helps to know exactly what this pipe volume calculator cubic yards is and isn't measuring.

Reading the output correctly

The headline value is the internal capacity of a round, uniform pipe running full — the fluid the bore can hold along the length you entered. Every other unit on the panel is the same physical quantity re-expressed, so you can quote whichever your paperwork needs without recalculating.

افتراض الأنبوب الممتلئ

By default the figure assumes the pipe is completely full and perfectly cylindrical. For gravity drains and vented lines that run part full, set a fill level below 100% and the result scales with it. Bends, valves and fittings add a little capacity the straight-length model does not see — use the fittings allowance to approximate them.

Schedule 40 2" pipe: volume by run length

How much a 2" Schedule 40 bore holds as the run gets longer, in yd³. The per-foot figure is constant, so any length is one multiplication away.

مثال محلول، خطوة بخطوة

  1. Bore = 2.067 in, so radius = 1.0335 in.
  2. Area = π × radius² = 3.3556 in².
  3. Length = 75 ft = 900 in; volume = 3.3556 × 900 = 3,020.0 in³.
  4. Convert to the unit you need: 0.0647 yd³ for a 75 ft run of Schedule 40 2" pipe.

الأسئلة الشائعة

How do I calculate pipe volume in cubic yards?

Compute the volume in cubic feet, then divide by 27. The calculator handles the conversion and shows ft³ and gallons alongside the yd³ figure.

How many cubic feet in a cubic yard?

Exactly 27 cubic feet make one cubic yard.

Can I use this to estimate grout to fill a pipe?

Yes — the internal volume is your neat grout volume. Add a 5–15% allowance for losses and over-break when you place your order.

Why does my small pipe read close to zero cubic yards?

A cubic yard is a large unit. For small pipes use the cubic-feet or gallons card instead.
