Volume first, then time
Fill and drain time follows directly from volume and flow rate:
Time = Volume ÷ Flow rate
Keep the units consistent — gallons with gallons-per-minute, litres with litres-per-minute.
The calculator computes the internal volume from the bore and length, then divides by the flow rate you enter (in GPM, L/min, L/s, m³/h or CFM) to give a clear fill or drain time. For a 500 ft run of 2-inch pipe holding about 87 US gallons, a 10 GPM tap fills the line in roughly nine minutes.
Flow rate, velocity and bore
Flow rate and velocity are two views of the same flow, connected by the cross-sectional area:
Flow rate = Velocity × Cross-sectional area
Because the calculator already reports the cross-sectional area of your pipe, you can move between the two: a target velocity times the area gives the flow rate the pipe will carry, and a known flow rate divided by the area gives the velocity. Keeping velocity in a sensible range (often quoted around 5–8 ft/s for water service) is how designers avoid noise, erosion and water hammer.
Where fill and flow time matter
- Flushing and chlorination — you need both the volume to dose and the dwell time.
- Commissioning — fill time helps schedule pressure tests and hand-overs.
- Draining and winterizing — drain time tells you how long to leave valves open.
- Batching and transfer — line fill time affects interface tracking and losses.
Keeping the estimate realistic
The fill-time result assumes a steady flow rate and a pipe that starts empty. Real fills slow as back pressure builds, drains slow as head drops, and pumps deliver less against resistance than their rated flow. Use the figure to plan and schedule, and watch the actual flow on gauges for anything time-critical. Compressible gases behave differently again — for gas, treat the geometric volume as the space to be purged rather than a simple time-to-fill.
A flushing example, start to finish
You need to flush 300 ft of 4-inch main. The tool gives about 198gives about 197 US gallonsnbsp;US gallons of internal volume. At a hydrant flow of 40 GPM, that is roughly five minutes for one full exchange; a three-volume flush is about fifteen minutes of run time. That is the kind of answer that turns a vague task into a schedulable one — volume and time from a single set of inputs.
Flow rate & velocity calculator
Enter a bore and either a velocity or a flow rate — this converts between the two using the pipe's cross-sectional area, in both US and metric units.
Flow rate is velocity × bore area. Keep water service in a sensible velocity band (often ~5–8 ft/s) to limit noise and erosion.
Pressure & flow rate calculator
Know the pressure or head loss you can spend over a run? This estimates the water flow rate the pipe will carry (Hazen–Williams), or works the other way from a target flow rate back to the pressure loss.
Hazen–Williams estimate for full-flowing water at ordinary temperatures. It covers friction loss along straight pipe; add fitting and elevation losses separately. For gases or high-viscosity fluids use a Darcy–Weisbach method instead.
Before you act on the output, it helps to know exactly what this calculate volume flow rate in pipe is and isn't measuring.
Reading the output correctly
The headline value is the internal capacity of a round, uniform pipe running full — the fluid the bore can hold along the length you entered. Every other unit on the panel is the same physical quantity re-expressed, so you can quote whichever your paperwork needs without recalculating.
By default the figure assumes the pipe is completely full and perfectly cylindrical. For gravity drains and vented lines that run part full, set a fill level below 100% and the result scales with it. Bends, valves and fittings add a little capacity the straight-length model does not see — use the fittings allowance to approximate them.

Schedule 40 2" pipe: volume by run length
How much a 2" Schedule 40 bore holds as the run gets longer, in US gal. The per-foot figure is constant, so any length is one multiplication away.

Schedule 40 pipe: volume across sizes
Volume held by a fixed 100 ft run across common Schedule 40 sizes, in US gal. Doubling the diameter roughly quadruples the capacity.

| 6" | 6.065 | 150.1 |
- Bore = 2.067 in, so radius = 1.0335 in.
- Area = π × radius² = 3.3556 in².
- Length = 75 ft = 900 in; volume = 3.3556 × 900 = 3,020.0 in³.
- Convert to the unit you need: 13.07 US gal for a 75 ft run of Schedule 40 2" pipe.
How do I calculate fill time for a pipe?
Divide the pipe's internal volume by the flow rate. Enter the bore, length and a flow rate above and the tool returns the fill (or drain) time directly.
How do I calculate volume flow rate in a pipe?
Multiply the flow velocity by the cross-sectional area of the bore. The calculator shows the area, so flow rate = velocity × area; conversely velocity = flow rate ÷ area.
What flow velocity is normal for water pipes?
Water service is often designed around 5–8 ft/s (about 1.5–2.4 m/s) to limit noise and erosion, though the right value depends on the application and code.
Why does real fill time differ from the estimate?
The estimate assumes constant flow into an empty pipe. In practice flow drops as back pressure or falling head develops, so use the figure for planning and verify with gauges when timing matters.
