Why this topic matters
Pipe of the same nominal size does not share the same bore across materials, and the bore is what holds the fluid. Schedule 80 has a thicker wall and smaller bore than Schedule 40; copper Type K, L and M each have a different wall; PEX runs a proportionally thick wall that makes its bore noticeably smaller than the label; HDPE has no fixed bore at all until you fix the dimension ratio. Each calculator below loads the published inside diameter for the material and size you pick — from ASME B36.10, ASTM B88, ASTM F876 or the HDPE DR relation — so the volume reflects the pipe in your hands rather than a nominal label. Choosing the wrong material family, or reusing a copper bore for PEX, is the most common way a volume estimate goes wrong.
If you are unsure which schedule, type or dimension ratio you actually have, read it off the pipe print rather than the nominal size, or measure the bore directly and use the custom option. Scale, lining and corrosion also shrink the effective bore over a pipe's life, so an old line holds a little less than its nominal figure suggests.
When you switch materials mid-project — say a copper riser feeding a PEX manifold — calculate each material's runs separately and add the totals, because their per-foot capacities are not interchangeable. Why does pipe volume change with material?
Same nominal size, different wall thickness means a different bore, and volume follows the bore squared. PEX holds less than copper of the same size; Schedule 80 holds less than Schedule 40.
Can I reuse one material's bore for another?
No. Copper, PEX, PVC and HDPE are dimensioned by different standards. Pick the matching calculator so the correct inside diameter is used.
How do I find the bore if my pipe is not a standard type?
Measure the inside diameter directly and enter it in the custom option, or measure the outside diameter and wall and let the tool derive the bore. A direct measurement always beats a nominal label.
Does Schedule 80 hold less than Schedule 40?
